Career Summary
¬Adam Kyle Spellicy is an Australian Writers Guild award-winning screenwriter based in Melbourne. He spent his formative childhood years in the New South Wales mining town of Broken Hill, where Wake In Fright (1971) was filmed, and credits that experience with his enduring fascination for dark, mysterious stories.
Before becoming involved in filmmaking, he worked as a graphic designer, advertising copywriter, music video director and musician, the latter as a founding member of acclaimed independent band The Dumb Earth. He has written and directed three short films - The Body Watchers (2009), Mystic Eyes (2009) and Keeper (2011) - which screened at various local and international festivals.
In 2016, Adam won the AWG’s Monte Miller Long Form Award and John Hinde Award For Best Unproduced Science Fiction Screenplay for the dystopian sci-fi feature script Mary, Mary, an honour he shared with co-writer Penelope Chai. The project was shortlisted for the AWG’s INSITE Award, and was developed with funding from Screen Australia. He has also secured draft development funding from Scripted Ink for Race With The Devil, a biopic about 50s singer Gene Vincent.
More recently, he scripted the short film We’re Not Here (2019), directed by Bonnie Moir, which premiered at the LA Outfest Film Festival and the Melbourne International Film Festival, and was awarded Best Screenplay at the 2020 Sydney Mardi Gras Film Festival. Adam’s latest produced short screenplay, The Bends (2020), directed by Tom Campbell, premiered at the 2021 Melbourne International Film Festival, and was nominated for an AACTA Award for Best Short Form Drama.
